First, identify the tax year: an individual income tax return filed in 2026 generally relates to the 2025 tax year. Do not mix those transactions with activity carried out in 2026. Check your deadline in the official DIAN calendar.

1. Does owning cryptocurrency require an income tax return?

Owning cryptoassets does not, by itself, mean that everyone must file a tax return. First, assess tax residence and the conditions for the relevant year: assets, income, purchases, spending, financial transactions and VAT status, among others. Filing a return does not necessarily mean that tax is payable.

For the 2025 tax year, the DIAN publishes the criteria and tools in its income tax preparation guide. Tax residence deserves particular attention if you live between Colombia and another country.

2. Review assets and transactions separately

The DIAN treats cryptoassets as assets that may form part of your wealth and generate income. If you are a Colombian tax resident required to file a return, the review covers domestic and overseas assets and income. Using a foreign exchange platform does not remove that requirement.

Prepare two lists: the assets you held at year end and the transactions you carried out during the year. Do not confuse the balance shown in an app with the reportable tax value: valuation and tax cost require assessment under the applicable rules.

As well as sales, identify crypto-to-crypto exchanges, payments received and rewards. An exchange may have tax consequences even if the money never reaches a bank account. Classification depends on the transaction. Reference: DIAN consolidated guidance on cryptoassets.

3. Documents to gather before calculating

Create a folder for each year and retain the original files. This preparation checklist will help you explain your situation clearly:

The DIAN recommends retaining supporting documents for assets, income, costs and deductions. See its official document checklist and filing steps. Do not share passwords, private keys or seed phrases for a tax review.

4. Mistakes that make the review harder

5. What if cryptocurrency was omitted from earlier returns?

Start by reconstructing what happened and in which periods. Prepare a timeline of acquisitions, transactions and returns filed. This helps assess whether returns should be corrected or filed and the specific consequences. Learn about the undeclared cryptoasset review service.
